Langtang National Park, the first Himalayan national park in Nepal, lies just north of the Kathmandu Valley and offers a quieter alternative to the busier Annapurna and Everest regions. The park protects a remarkable spread of ecosystems, from subtropical forest to alpine scrub and perennial ice, and is home to red pandas, Himalayan tahr, musk deer and snow leopards. The Langtang Valley trek follows the Langtang Khola past Tamang villages, yak pastures and the sacred glacial lakes of Gosaikunda, a major Hindu pilgrimage site. Devastated by the 2015 earthquake, the valley communities have rebuilt with resilience, and trekking here directly supports local recovery. Its proximity to Kathmandu makes it ideal for travellers with limited time who still want an authentic high-mountain experience.
