About the Annapurna Region
The Annapurna Region in north-central Nepal is one of the most popular trekking destinations on earth, drawing hundreds of thousands of walkers each year. Centred on the Annapurna massif — which includes Annapurna I, the tenth-highest mountain in the world at 8,091 metres — the region offers an extraordinary range of landscapes within a compact area. Trekkers pass through subtropical forests, terraced farmland, alpine meadows and the deep gorges of the Kali Gandaki, the deepest river canyon on the planet. The classic Annapurna Circuit and the shorter Annapurna Base Camp trek both showcase Gurung and Magar mountain villages, ancient pilgrimage sites and panoramic Himalayan views. Pokhara, the lakeside gateway city, serves as the launch point for most journeys into the region and is itself worth several days of exploration.
